Since the 1960’s, Bewarm TV and its various owners have specialised in providing excellent quality service and products to the people of Mid Sussex.
Originally started in Burgess Hill by Phil Umpleby, the family run business started selling general electrical appliances (including electric heaters, hence our name “be warm” and presumably not cold!!). Very quickly Phil and his staff moved into selling television as well offering them for rent. For many this would be their first dealings with the company, and we are pleased to say many of those customers still rent or purchase their new products from us today!
During 1980’s, Phil had decided to retire and sold the business to the “Wood Brothers” chain from Brighton. They already had several successful stores and were keen to carry on the Bewarm family tradition at the shops then location of Clock House, High Street, Cuckfield. During this time the company naturally began to move away from general appliances and focus more on the expanding world of television and home video. The renting of TV’s and video equipment was still very popular at this time due to the cost of equipment, I’m sure most people will remember the cost of their first video recorder, whether it be a Philips 2000, Ferguson / JVC VHS or of course the amazing Sony Betamax! For those of you too young to remember, the cost now would roughly be about £1500.00 in today’s market!

In 1992, the business was taken over by Steve and Mark, now fully focussed on expanding the range of Sony products and embracing many of the new technologies that we have seen launched since the 1990’s! Widescreen, 100 Hz, Flat screen LCD and Plasma TV’s, Digital television, Freeview, High definition, playstation, digital cameras…the list just goes on and on! And with OLED 3mm thick 3D television just around the corner, the future of home electronics is certainly exciting, and the place to come…is of course Bewarm TV.
